A couple’s summer refuge is disrupted when Susanna takes in a Ukrainian teenager forced into prostitution.

The story

Alfredo and Susanna, a couple in their fifties who have been together since protesting discrimination at university, are preparing for their customary summer at their private country estate. There Susanna encounters Nadja, a seventeen-year-old Ukrainian girl forced into prostitution. Unable to ignore her situation, Susanna brings Nadja into their home, hoping to take her to Rome and find her somewhere to live. Though initially guarded, Nadja gradually opens up. Alfredo lends her Russian-language books and becomes her teacher, while Susanna becomes her confidante. The arrangement grows more difficult when the couple’s son arrives and the practical obstacles to their original plan become increasingly apparent.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Alfredo and Susanna, a couple in their fifties who have been together since they protested against discrimination at university, are ready to spend the summer, as they always do, at their private country estate. There, Susanna is shocked to encounter Nadja, a seventeen-year-old Ukrainian girl forced into prostitution. As always, she cannot pretend not to notice and takes Nadja into her home, intending to bring her to Rome and find her somewhere to live. After initially holding back, the young woman begins to open up and tell them a little about herself. At first, she builds a good relationship with both spouses: Alfredo becomes her teacher, lending her many books in Russian so she can learn about her country’s culture, while Susanna becomes her confidante and friend. The arrival of the couple’s son, along with the obvious difficulty of putting their original plan into practice, leads Susanna to find Nadja’s presence increasingly hard to bear.
