When murders bearing a jailed serial killer’s signature resume, a retired former cop is pulled into a tense investigation with a very different kind of captain.
The story
Murders attributed to serial killer Gabriel Laporte appear to resume even though he remains in prison, and the new crimes seem to bear his signature. Seeking to reopen the investigation, Captain Kabongo brings Thierry Chevalier out of retirement. Chevalier is the former cop who brutally extracted Laporte’s confession. His return sets up a difficult working relationship: Kabongo is described as progressive, feminist, and vegan, while Chevalier is characterized as an old-school, reactionary, macho cop with openly prejudiced views. The pair must face the unsettling question raised by the renewed murders while attempting to work together.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The serial killer Gabriel Laporte’s murders seem to be starting up again, even though he is in prison—and yet these new murders seem to bear his signature. To reopen the investigation, Captain Kabongo brings Thierry Chevalier out of retirement, the former cop who had brutally extracted a confession from Laporte. Collaboration looks set to be very difficult between Kabongo, a progressive, feminist vegan, and Chevalier, an old-school cop who is reactionary, macho, racist, a meat-eater, misogynistic, homophobic, and anti-woke.
