Full plot (contains spoilers)

A brief Sunday encounter between two would-be lovers who have been corresponding: he, Adolfo (François Périer), works as a clerk in a stationer’s and bookshop in Rome; she, Pina (Sandra Milo), lives alone in a small town in the Po Valley, nearing forty, and has placed a marriage ad in a magazine. Their correspondence worked wonderfully, but when Adolfo goes to meet Pina in person, within a few hours the flaws of both of them come to light—especially his: he is a hypocritical, greedy, vulgar petty bourgeois. After a night of love, improvised more out of loneliness than love, the two say goodbye at the station, knowing they will never see each other again.
