After witnessing a suspicious scene across the courtyard, a Hitchcock enthusiast becomes convinced she has seen a crime.
The story
Actor Yann Kerbec invites his new neighbors to see him perform in Hamlet. François Tarnowski, a writer of historical crime novels, is reluctant to go, but his partner, Colette Courreau, an Alfred Hitchcock specialist, persuades him to join her. On their way home from the performance, Colette looks toward the apartment across the courtyard, where Yann and his wife now live, and witnesses what she takes to be a crime. Her conviction sets the story’s initial mystery in motion.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Yann Kerbec, an actor, invites his new neighbors to a performance of Hamlet, in which he is appearing. François Tarnowski, a writer of historical crime novels, is not very enthusiastic about the idea, but his partner, Colette Courreau, an Alfred Hitchcock specialist, convinces him not to pass up the chance for an outing. On their way back from the performance, she witnesses a scene in the apartment opposite, where Yann and his wife now live. Colette is convinced that, looking out through her courtyard-facing window, she has witnessed a crime, just as in Hitchcock’s film of that name.
