Lenya, found as a baby and raised by a foster mother in a small village, learns from Odin that she is destined to find the royal sword Balmaran and free the Walsungs, a people conquered by Hagir von Amelung and his son Egil. Hagir is also searching for the sword, which the Pope has demanded in exchange for recognizing Egil as king. After Hagir’s forces attack and burn Lenya’s village, she vows to fulfill her destiny. With her foster sister Ayescha, she joins the bandit Gero and his men; impressed by Lenya’s resolve, Gero trains her to fight. Their search for answers leads them toward an oracle, while the danger surrounding the sword grows.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hagir von Amelung is the ruler of the Burgundians. Together with his son Egil, he invaded the land of the Walsungs, killed their king, Thorwald, and subjugated the people, forcing them to renounce the old gods. The oppressed now place their hopes in a prophecy that says the gods will send a chosen one. This person will find the royal sword Balmaran and free the Walsungs from the conquerors’ yoke. Hagir von Amelung is also searching for the sword, since the Pope demands it in return for crowning his son Egil as the rightful king of the Walsungs. To obtain it, Hagir does not hesitate to enlist the help of the witch Kundrie. One day, Odin appears to the young Lenya, who was found as a baby and raised by a foster mother in a small village. She is told that she is the chosen one who must find Balmaran. Soon afterward, on the witch’s advice, Hagir has the small village attacked and burned down. Lenya promises her dying foster mother that she will search for the sword. Lenya and her foster sister Ayescha join the bandit Gero and his men. Impressed by Lenya’s determination, Gero trains her in staff fighting and swordsmanship, turning her into a formidable fighter. The two fall in love. The search for Mimir, a priest of Odin, leads Lenya and Ayescha to a Burgundian city. He tells her that she must seek out the oracle at Dragon Lake. However, while escaping from the city, Ayescha is captured. Accompanied by Gero, Lenya sets out for Dragon Lake. There she learns that she must first recover her lost necklace, an important artifact that has fallen into Kundrie’s hands. By now, the witch has used her black magic to discover that Lenya is the daughter of the former king, Thorwald, and a Valkyrie. To protect Lenya, Gero knocks her unconscious and sets out alone to find the necklace. He manages to retrieve the artifact and hand it over to Lenya, but is badly wounded and dies. Following the oracle’s guidance, Lenya now goes to a sacred place, where she indeed finds Balmaran and claims it. She then confronts Hagir, who demands the sword in exchange for the captured Ayescha. But Lenya sees through the deception: the person standing before her is not Ayescha, but Kundrie, who is after the necklace once again. With the sword Balmaran, Lenya kills the witch and takes Hagir’s son captive. Ayescha is freed, and the Burgundians are forced to submit to Lenya’s power and retreat. The prophecy has been fulfilled.
