Three linked episodes trace the fate of a brothel’s farewell lantern and the lives of its former residents.

The story

Each segment opens with a brief introductory text. As the brothel run by Monsieur Charles and Madame Blanche faces closure, they prepare to bid farewell to its residents and regular visitors. Lucette is away in mourning when gifts are given, and the establishment’s lantern goes to her. Later, two petty thieves are tried for stealing valuables from a baroness, including that lantern; the baroness, formerly Lucette, comes to testify. In the final segment’s setup, Léon Haudepin, an insurance agent and sports-club member, encounters Héloïse, another former resident, amid a situation involving Inspector Grannu.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Before each segment, the film presents a short introductory text. The Closure: Monsieur Charles and Madame Blanche are very sad: the brothel they run is about to close, and they must say goodbye to the pretty girls and to all their friends who used to frequent the place. As a farewell, the proprietors give each of the residents a gift, but Lucette is absent because she is in mourning. The establishment’s sign (the lantern) goes to this particularly gifted resident, whom Monsieur Charles predicts will rise to a high social position. The Trial: Two petty crooks have stolen several valuables from a baroness, including the lantern that Monsieur Charles had given her as a keepsake. The baroness was once Lucette, the former resident who was absent when the establishment closed. She comes to testify at their trial. The Good Fellows: Léon Haudepin, a general insurance agent and member of a sports club, encounters Héloïse on his way. She too is a former resident of the brothel. He saves her from Inspector Grannu’s clutches and, thanks to this encounter, becomes rich and has a series of hilarious adventures.
