When the Queen of France cannot wear the necklace expected at her next public appearance, she sends four musketeers to retrieve the gift she secretly gave away.
The story
The Queen of France is in a bind: for their next public appearance, the King expects her to wear the necklace of ornamental aiglets he gave her for the Feast of Saint Anne. She has secretly given it to the Duke of Buckingham as a token of esteem, after making him promise not to seek her out again. Suspecting Cardinal Richelieu and Father Joseph of plotting to disgrace her, she follows her linen maid Constance’s advice and sends Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan, along with their servants, to England to retrieve the necklace. But the Cardinal learns of her plan and sends Milady de Winter to London ahead of them.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Queen of France finds herself in a predicament. For their next public appearance, the King has asked her to wear the necklace of ornamental aiglets that he gave her as a gift for the Feast of Saint Anne. But the Queen has already given it to the Duke of Buckingham as a token of esteem during a secret visit, making him promise never again to try to see her. She suspects a plot by Cardinal Richelieu and Father Joseph, who are prepared to do anything to disgrace her. On the advice of Constance, her linen maid, the Queen entrusts the four musketeers—Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan—as well as their servants, with going to England to retrieve her necklace. However, the Cardinal, having learned of her plan, sends Milady de Winter to London to get there ahead of them and recover the necklace first. In Calais, through her seduction and a powerful sleeping draught mixed with sherry, Milady manages to put the four musketeers to sleep one by one on the eve of their departure for London. Much against their will, the four servants, disguised as musketeers, set off for London to carry out their masters’ mission.
