The story
During the Second World War, a Japanese Imperial Army attack catches French forces in Indochina off guard, leaving a field hospital amid widespread deaths. There, Warrant Officer Janiçki, a Polish-born veteran with the Foreign Legion’s 5th REI, makes a desperate choice to flee with the last nineteen men still standing. The survivors are psychologically scarred and ravaged by alcohol and drugs; their abrupt withdrawal leaves them unstable, paranoid and sometimes violent. They set out through the jungle toward an Allied post in China, as heat, hunger, hallucinations and disagreements over direction threaten to deepen tensions.

On [date omitted], in the midst of the Second World War, the Japanese Imperial Army launches a lightning attack against French forces in Indochina. Caught off guard, the colonial troops are decimated. Thousands of civilians and soldiers perish in the chaos. At the heart of the carnage, in a field hospital run by the Foreign Legion’s 5th REI, Warrant Officer Janiçki—a veteran of Polish origin—makes a desperate decision: to flee with the last nineteen men still standing. But these survivors are no ordinary soldiers. They are broken men, ravaged by alcohol, drugs, and the psychological scars of war. Their abrupt withdrawal makes them unstable, paranoid, and sometimes violent. The group sets out on a perilous trek through the jungle, with their only hope an Allied post in China, more than [distance omitted] away. Tensions soon rise. The heat, hunger, hallucinations, and disagreements over which direction to take bring old resentments to the surface. Janiçki tries to maintain order, but his authority begins to falter. Each man becomes a threat to the others. The jungle, meanwhile, shows no mercy. As the days pass, members of the group disappear—victims of nature, their own demons, or internal conflicts. In the end, only one man reaches the Allied post.
