A family holiday turns into a desperate search when five-year-old Lilly vanishes from the hotel apartment.

The story

Anna and Robert Bischoff are vacationing on a Mediterranean island with their children, Noah and five-year-old Lilly, and family friend Johanna Pohlmann and her children. The adults spend evenings at a nearby tapas bar while the children sleep in the hotel apartment. One evening, Lilly disappears. Anna and Robert search nearby without success, and detectives Isabell Navarro and Antonio Gomez take over the investigation. With no clear leads, investigators consider whether Lilly wandered away or was abducted. As the search continues, her parents seek public attention for the case, hoping it will produce clues and prevent the investigation from being prematurely curtailed.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Anna and Robert Bischoff are on a family holiday on a Mediterranean island with their two children, Noah and Lilly, and their friend Johanna Pohlmann, who is there with her two children. During the day, they spend time together at the beach and in the sea. While the children sleep alone in the hotel apartment, the parents spend their evenings with the couple Sara and Niklas Grothe at the tapas bar next to the hotel. But when their five-year-old daughter Lilly disappears one evening, the holiday becomes a nightmare for Anna and Robert Bischoff. Their search of the surrounding area is fruitless. Detectives Isabell Navarro and Antonio Gomez take charge of the investigation into Lilly’s disappearance. A desperate search for the little girl begins. Did Lilly leave the apartment on her own and get lost, or was she abducted? At first, there seem to be no leads, but possible suspects eventually come under scrutiny and then have to be released for lack of evidence. Under pressure from time, the Bischoffs strike a deal with Bo Eilers, a tabloid journalist for the island magazine, in order to alert the public and put media pressure on the police, so that the search will not be called off prematurely out of concern that tourism on the island might suffer reputational damage. Lilly has now been missing for days, and despite a massive deployment of officers, the local police have been unable to find her. Her parents hope that press coverage will bring forward clues about their daughter’s disappearance. Meanwhile, the investigating officers begin to have doubts and pursue other leads, and the parents themselves come under suspicion. Much points to them, and Anna and Robert’s accounts also contradict each other. To avoid further investigation into their own activities, they flee back to Germany. There, Robert is also struggling with financial problems related to the medical practice he runs jointly with Johanna Pohlmann. The Grothes, the couple they met on holiday, now become additional suspects. However, it turns out that the Grothes have adopted a child, and that child is not the missing Lilly Bischoff. While keeping the hotel maid under surveillance, Bo Eilers happens to see Peter Maiwald with an unidentified woman. Eilers watches Maiwald and the woman load a lot of toys and children’s clothes into a car in the parking lot, then follows them. After Anna Bischoff calls Eilers, the Bischoffs secretly return to the holiday island and intensify their search for their missing daughter. As she searches for Lilly, Anna Bischoff keeps watch on Peter Maiwald’s house, while Eilers and Robert Bischoff try to find the property that Maiwald and the unidentified woman went to. Hotel staff recognize Anna Bischoff as she leaves the hotel grounds and alert the police. Meanwhile, Robert Bischoff sees the unidentified woman heading toward a property with a child by the hand. As Anna is arrested, Robert Bischoff alerts the police. Anna’s arrest allows Peter Maiwald to leave his property and reach the place where Robert stops him. Maiwald admits that he abducted Lilly and that she is well, but that she believes her parents and brother died in an accident. At last, Anna Bischoff can take her daughter in her arms, and the family returns by ferry.
