The story
Fifteen-year-old Lina is in ninth grade and lives with her family in a row house in Rödköping, nicknamed Deadville. Feeling inexperienced and eager to fit in, she begins dating older student Danne despite not really liking him, while trying to keep up with her popular friends Thea and Carro. Lina suspects they spend time with her to make themselves look better. Privately, she is in love with Ivar, a new seventh-grader who lives on a houseboat with his alternative family and sings in a choir. As Lina and Danne make tentative attempts at intimacy, she feels shy, lonely, and unsure of herself.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fifteen-year-old Lina is in ninth grade and lives with her family in a row house in Rödköping (so-called Deadville). She is still unkissed, inexperienced, and a virgin. She wants to change that, so she gets together with the older Danne even though she does not really like him, mainly to fit in with her friends: the pretty, popular Thea and Carro, who is alternative but ditzy. Lina is convinced that Thea and Carro are only hanging out with her to look better by comparison. In secret, Lina is in love with Ivar, a new seventh-grader with unruly hair and corduroy trousers who lives on a houseboat with his alternative family and also sings in a choir. Lina and Danne date and make clumsy, tentative attempts at sex, but Lina feels shy, frigid, stupid, and lonely.
