A fiercely independent woman must endure three months of uncertainty as her premature daughter remains in an incubator.

The story

Maria, accustomed to relying on her own strength and making her life’s decisions independently, faces an unexpected ordeal after her pregnancy ends: her daughter Irene remains in an incubator. For three months, Maria waits to learn whether the baby will begin living or die. The enforced passivity is alien to her, and she retreats into a suspended state that shuts out the world. Other mothers enduring similar uncertainty become her fellow sufferers and help her through the difficult period.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Maria (Margherita Buy) is expecting a baby girl. She is no longer pregnant, but she is still waiting. Waiting for her daughter to be born—or to die. And if there is one thing Maria doesn’t know how to do, it’s wait. That is why the three months she has to face alone, waiting for her daughter Irene to come out of the incubator, catch her unprepared. Accustomed to relying solely on her own strength and making decisions about her life entirely on her own, Maria forces herself into a passive state of suspended breath that shuts out the whole world, imprisoning herself in the blank space of waiting. The people who will help her through this difficult journey are her fellow sufferers: other mothers who, like her, are waiting for their babies to begin living.
