A celebrated philosopher and a young university cleaner plan a church wedding despite their cultural and generational differences.
The story
Professor Gianni Buridano, a world-famous philosopher who has recently reached middle age, falls in love with Samantha, a young cleaner at the university where he teaches. They come from different generations and cultural worlds, yet decide to marry in a church. That choice is striking given Gianni’s career of strong criticism of Western Catholic morality. Their plans meet immediate complications as the wedding planner grows anxious and nervous, and events at the church begin to go awry.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film tells the story of a marriage that would unite two opposing worlds, which want to come together despite their differences. The trouble is that these very differences make them incompatible, so that the more they try to unite, the further apart they drift. Professor Gianni Buridano is a philosopher, famous around the world. Recently reaching middle age, he falls hopelessly in love with Samantha, the beautiful young woman who works as a cleaner at the same university where he teaches. Despite their cultural differences and belonging to different generations, the two decide to get married—and to do so in a church, even though Gianni’s entire career has been marked by strong criticism of Western Catholic morality. Things, however, do not go as planned, amid the wedding planner’s anxiety and nervousness. The bride falls down the stairs and injures herself, losing a tooth. The groom, meanwhile, gets stuck in the church bathroom because he cannot stop urinating.
