Egon Olsen plans one last modest heist, but a stolen briefcase draws the gang into a dangerous struggle with powerful businessmen.

The story

After another stay in Vridsløse State Prison, Egon Olsen learns that the new governor wants him transferred to psychiatric custody, so he decides to retire after one final, modest heist. A fellow inmate tells him about a company executive who has secretly amassed five million kroner and plans to flee during a business trip to Paris. Egon and his gang break into the company and take a briefcase from a safe, believing it contains the hidden cash and only unimportant papers. Their celebratory confidence proves premature when the company’s directors react far more urgently than expected, and the gang finds itself pursued by a security guard determined to recover the case.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Egon’s latest stay in Vridsløse State Prison has not gone well: a new, young prison governor with a doctorate in psychology wants Egon transferred to psychiatric custody. Egon therefore plans to retire. But before he does, he intends to pull off a modest heist worth a few million—a heist that cannot go wrong! Once again, Egon has shared a cell with a well-informed inmate: Kastrup Carlsen, a former deputy managing director of the insurance company Høje Nord, has told Egon that the new deputy managing director, Hallandsen, is becoming stressed by all the speculation and dubious business methods of managing director Bang-Johansen. Through embezzlement, Hallandsen has amassed a secret fortune of five million kroner in cash, and plans to flee during an imminent business trip to Paris. With their usual timing and meticulous planning, the gang breaks into Høje Nord and steals Hallandsen’s briefcase from a Franz Jäger safe. He has hidden the money inside it. Certain that, apart from the money, the briefcase contains nothing but insignificant business papers, and that Hallandsen will not make a big fuss and risk Bang-Johansen discovering both the money and his escape plan, the gang enjoys a celebratory beer. But it turns out that the loss of the briefcase matters far more to both managing directors than expected. Bang-Johansen quickly figures that whoever took the briefcase must have heard about the Paris deal from Kastrup Carlsen in prison, and soon learns the name Egon Olsen. Høje Nord’s security guard, Bøffen, kidnaps Egon and returns the briefcase to Hallandsen. Benny and Kjeld free Egon, and the gang steals the briefcase again from Hallandsen’s taxi on its way to the airport. But Bøffen is already on the scene again and lies in wait at Kjeld and Yvonne’s home, this time under explicit orders to make Egon disappear because he knows too much. He knocks Egon unconscious and drives him to a gravel pit to throw him into a stone crusher. Once again, Benny and Kjeld have to rescue Egon at the last moment. The gang’s last chance to get hold of the briefcase is now at the security checkpoint at Copenhagen Airport, where Bøffen cannot protect Hallandsen. They plant metal on Hallandsen by swapping his trench coat for an identical one with pockets full of nails. This sets off the metal detector; Hallandsen is taken aside for a search, and in the confusion Kjeld grabs the briefcase. This is too much for Hallandsen, who breaks down. On the way home, Kjeld wants to buy Yvonne a fur coat, and Egon now discovers, to his horror, that there is no money in the briefcase! The gang searches the briefcase and discovers a false bottom concealing a highly secret contract for illegal weapons worth 750 million kroner. Bang-Johansen intends to sell the weapons at a good profit to a union of African states that cannot buy weapons on the legal market. Egon suddenly understands why Bang-Johansen is so determined to get the briefcase back, and plans to return the contract to him in exchange for a modest payment of five million kroner. To make sure Bang-Johansen does not try to kill him again, Egon takes out a life insurance policy with Høje Nord for the same amount. Unfortunately, he has not read the exclusions in the small print, and Bøffen is once again ordered to make Egon disappear for good. Bøffen then drives Egon to the Amager Acid Factory and intends to throw him into the large acid tank. At the last moment, Kjeld and Benny rescue him. And so the film ends.
