Full plot (contains spoilers)

A feature-length adaptation of a sketch by Robert Lamoureux, the film depicts an average French family and their relations with their neighbors, shopkeepers, and servants in an apartment building in Montmartre. Robert, a trainee at the law office of Mr. Turpin, still lives with his parents. While flirting with a colleague, he is fired by his jealous employer. He then meets Catherine, who is caring for a little girl—her niece—and falls in love with her. However, Robert hesitates to tell his parents that he plans to marry because his professional situation is becoming uncertain and his father is somewhat authoritarian.
