Full plot (contains spoilers)
Fifty-year-old Allenwil police officer Gottfried Wäckerli has family worries: his son Ruedi is unhappy in his office apprenticeship and is living beyond his means. In addition, 10,000 francs have gone missing from the municipal treasury. Wäckerli’s daughter Marti loves Hans Bader, an assistant milkman who is suspected of stealing 50 francs from his employer’s cashbox. Unable to bear his authoritarian father’s mistrust any longer, Ruedi leaves home after an argument and goes to Zurich, where he gets the chance to prove his talents as a graphic artist by designing the décor for the “Chérie Bar.” A con man swindles him out of 3,000 francs, which Ruedi had borrowed from Häberli, the Allenwil municipal treasurer. Wäckerli exposes Häberli as the thief of the tax money, and he is arrested. Mary, the barmaid at the Chérie Bar, reconciles the Wäckerli family. Bader settles his old debt and then returns the stolen 50 francs to the milkman. Wäckerli turns a blind eye and overcomes his prejudice about his son Ruedi’s artistic abilities.
