Porretta Terme, 1936: Silvia and Angelo, two young people from different social backgrounds, are soon to be married and have arranged a celebratory lunch, which tradition says must have exactly twenty courses, so their two families can get to know each other. The happy occasion takes place at the mansion of Silvia’s family, prosperous farmers and landowners, while Angelo arrives on the day of the celebration with his mother, sister, and aunt, who are members of Bologna’s bourgeoisie. The monumental lunch, organized without sparing any expense, becomes a setting in which the two families, belonging to different worlds, are contrasted, causing considerable embarrassment for the future bride and groom. Despite some tensions and minor mishaps, the day proves a success, and Angelo and his family return to Bologna by train.
