The story

Frank leaves the hospital after a heart attack with orders to avoid exertion, while his wife, Kathrin, keeps watch over his health. At the theater where he works as a doorman, a tango group led by Maresa is rehearsing. Frank tentatively joins, discovers a passion for dancing, and secretly gets the outfit he needs, even as his heart condition sometimes frightens him. He hides this new interest from his family, who are facing eviction because the owner needs their apartment, while their teenage daughter Paula has been skipping school.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Frank is discharged from the hospital after recovering from a heart attack. He is supposed to avoid any exertion. Concerned for her husband and the family’s future, his wife Kathrin looks after his health by regularly checking his blood pressure. She works as a nurse. Their teenage daughter Paula also lives at home. Frank regularly drives his very critical mother-in-law, Ingrid, to water aerobics in his wife’s car. He works as a theater doorman alongside his colleague Navid. A tango group led by Maresa rehearses there. Frank tentatively joins the class, and Maresa helps him develop the right inner attitude toward his dance partner and his own body. Frank develops a passion for tango and secretly gets the outfit he needs. He becomes increasingly immersed in the world of tango and is even invited to perform. At times his heart condition frightens him, but each time a dance begins, he manages to go beyond his limits. A slight rivalry also develops between him and Esequiel, the favorite in the group. Frank hides his new passion from his family, who have several problems to deal with: They are being evicted from their apartment because the owner needs it for personal use, and buying a new one would require Frank and Kathrin to use up all their savings. Then it also comes to light that Paula has been skipping school extensively. At a parent-teacher meeting, Kathrin is shocked to learn that Paula’s teacher, Julia, is Frank’s dance partner. She throws him out of their shared apartment, and he has to ask his mother-in-law for shelter because his friends won’t take him in. During their separation, both he and Kathrin go to the bank separately and secure approval for a loan for a new apartment. At a public tango performance, Kathrin watches her husband and is delighted; Paula, too, watches expectantly, accompanied by his colleague.
