The story
A woman flees a luxurious apartment in panic, leaving her young lover dead. Soon afterward, housekeeper Alice Mercier discovers her employer’s body and a forgotten wallet. She arranges to meet the woman, Hélène Dewallon, wife of a major pharmaceutical laboratory head in Lyon and campaigning to become a member of parliament. Hélène implies she left her lover alive, but Alice doubts her and reproaches her for not calling emergency services. Alice promises not to go to the police, refuses Hélène’s offer of money, and asks instead to become her friend.

A woman flees a luxurious apartment in a panic, leaving her young lover dead behind her. Shortly afterward, Alice Mercier, the housekeeper, discovers her employer’s body and a forgotten wallet. She arranges to meet the woman and thereby meets Hélène Dewallon, wife of the head of a major pharmaceutical laboratory in Lyon, who is in the midst of an election campaign to become a member of parliament. Hélène gives the impression that she left her lover alive, but Alice does not believe her and reproaches her for not calling emergency services to try to save her employer. Alice nevertheless promises not to tell the police. She refuses the money Hélène offers and asks only to become her friend in return. Hélène will try to put an end to this blackmail while keeping the truth from those around her. But Alice will become increasingly intrusive.
