The story

During the First World War, a mother’s two sons take different paths in the service of their fatherland. The elder volunteers for the front, while the younger takes a job in an ammunition factory. There, a man who presents himself as a champion of workers’ rights influences him and incites him and his colleagues to strike. The stoppage disrupts ammunition supplies for the elder brother and his comrades, placing the soldiers in serious danger. The brothers’ choices set their family on a course toward painful consequences.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The story tells of the fate of a mother and her two sons, who take different paths during the First World War in order to serve “the glory of their fatherland.” While the elder son volunteers for the front, the younger one takes a job in an ammunition factory. There, however, he soon falls under the influence of a man who presents himself as a fighter for workers’ rights but is portrayed in the story as pernicious. The man incites him and his colleagues to go on strike. The strike then causes the other son and his comrades serious problems with their ammunition supplies, putting their lives in the greatest danger. For this very reason, the soldier brother eventually falls in the field. Only then does the younger brother recognize his mistake and want to atone for what he has done by volunteering for the front as well. Instead of him, the elderly mother takes the now-vacant place at the ammunition factory’s lathe.
