A pastor’s romance and the intertwined struggles of apartment-building neighbors bring questions of love, commitment, and change into focus.
The story
Protestant pastor Gregor Thaler is in love with jazz singer Miriam Kirsch, whose estranged husband, Jan, has left her and their daughter, Julchen, but has not divorced her. Their relationship faces pressure from the church council and congregation, and from Gregor’s wish that Miriam formalize the separation while she hesitates for Julchen’s sake. Around them, residents of their apartment building confront personal upheavals: Achim Henning adjusts to his wife’s departure, caretaker Eberling struggles with his dementia, and neighbors Isabell and Nick disagree about having children. The residents’ private dilemmas gradually intersect as they navigate care, family, and uncertain futures.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The Protestant pastor Gregor Thaler is in a relationship with his new love, jazz singer Miriam Kirsch. This angers the church council and the congregation, because Miriam has not yet divorced her husband Jan, who left her and their daughter Julchen. It also causes friction in the couple’s relationship when Gregor wants Miriam to divorce Jan, but Miriam refuses out of consideration for Julchen. Jan, moreover, has begun showing interest in his former partner again. The neighbors in the apartment building are also grappling with worries and troubles. Achim Henning has to come to terms with his wife Waltraud leaving him to find herself, and needs the help of Lori, the cleaner. Henning takes Lori in when she turns up at his door one evening with bruises. Miriam offers to make music with Henning, who used to enjoy playing the flute. Later, to his disappointment, Henning discovers that Lori has been secretly stealing from him. Remorseful, Lori returns the stolen goods. The building caretaker, Eberling, refuses to accept that he has dementia and even hides his pills. When he leaves a pan of fried potatoes cooking and causes a kitchen fire, his daughter Ingrid moves in with him. After discovering the hidden pills, Ingrid concludes that her father has to go into a care home. After initially hesitating, he agrees. Meanwhile, the couple Isabell and Nick disagree about whether to have children. After a period of arguing, Isabell suggests waiting to try for a child until they are both ready. Michael, a single father, has to deal with his teenage daughter Nina having her first boyfriend. At the same time, he has his eye on Ingrid. When Miriam comes home after an evening concert, she discovers that Jan has not looked after Julchen as promised; instead, he has met up with his new love, Sonja. Disappointed that he seems not to care about her or Julchen, Miriam demands a divorce. Gregor marries a couple and emphasizes in his sermon the limits of a morality that cannot withstand love. At the same time, to the dismay of his critics, he announces that he intends to give up his position. When the residents of the building hold a party to say goodbye to the caretaker, Eberling, Michael and Ingrid grow closer.
