A newly arrived child therapist tries to help troubled children while struggling with uncertainty in her own life.

The story

Judith, a young child therapist at the start of her career, has recently moved to Berlin. Her boyfriend Christian was meant to join her in their shared apartment, but he has not been in touch. At work, she is assigned to pay particular attention to three children: six-year-old Konrad, who regularly wets the bed; nine-year-old Linus, who lashes out to win the respect of other children; and thirteen-year-old Nele, who skips school, smokes, and runs away from home. Judith seeks to help them in her own way, though her boss and colleagues seldom understand her approach. Their struggles unfold alongside a lost humpback whale in the Baltic Sea.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Judith, in her late twenties and just starting her career as a child therapist, moved to Berlin three weeks ago. The plan was for her boyfriend Christian to join her in their shared apartment, but he has not been in touch. At her new workplace, Judith has to pay special attention to Konrad, Linus, and Nele. Konrad is six years old, about to start school, and wets the bed almost every day. Linus, nine, likes to lash out in order to earn the respect of the other children. Nele, thirteen, goes her own way and refuses to listen to the adults: she skips school, smokes, and runs away from home. Judith tries to help the children in her own way, but her boss and colleagues rarely understand her approach. Meanwhile, a humpback whale has lost its way in the Baltic Sea and can no longer find its way back to the Atlantic. Everyone is searching for direction, for the right way out of a crisis and periods of confusion.
