The story
Twelve-year-old Katelijne grows up in late-1980s Zeeland within a devout farming family and a strict Reformed religious community. Surrounded by six brothers, she struggles to find her place in the male world of her household; conversations at the table often pass her by as her mind wanders. She becomes absorbed in fairy tales, although her parents forbid them because they regard such stories as lies. Learning and reading offer Katelijne a way to escape the confines of farm life, setting her private imagination against the expectations of her family and community.
