A workaholic hotel owner’s covert family holiday turns into a tangle of mistaken identities and romantic complications.

The story

Workaholic travel-agency head Dr. Karl Maria Wegner has never taken a vacation with his wife, Mathilde, or their children, Erich and Gaby. When Mathilde plans a trip to Spain, Karl instead brings the family to one of his hotels in Carinthia, intending to inspect it under a false name. A mistaken identity gives vacationer Bubi Berger the best suite, while the Wegners are relegated to a poor room. Their stay grows more complicated when Elfriede, who can expose an embarrassing past encounter, pressures Karl, and Gaby falls for Walter, a waiter connected to a local gamekeeper facing a difficult decision about his woodland.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Dr. Karl Maria Wegner, head of the Wegner travel agencies, is a workaholic, which is why he and his family—his wife Mathilde and their children Erich and Gaby—have never been on vacation. When Mathilde plans to go to Spain with the children, Karl already has other plans. He takes the family to Carinthia, to one of his hotels, where he intends to inspect its quality under a false name. The hotel manager is informed that his boss is expected to arrive, but he mistakes Bubi Berger for Wegner. Berger is on vacation with his crime-novel-obsessed mother and is very surprised to receive the best suite and a welcoming glass of wine. Wegner and his family are put in a small room with no running water or lake view, and the hotel manager treats them badly when they try to complain. Wegner has another problem, however: Elfriede is also staying at the hotel. Some time earlier, after a night of heavy drinking, he had woken up in her bed. Now she is trying to extort a diamond ring from him, threatening to tell his wife about the night-time incident if he does not give her one. Meanwhile, Gaby has fallen in love with Walter, a waiter and the nephew of Anger, the gamekeeper. Anger runs a wildlife park not far from the hotel grounds and is heavily in debt. Some time ago, Wegner paid off his debts, and since Anger cannot repay him, he is now on the verge of selling the woodland. He knows that Wegner intends to build vacation homes on the land, so he keeps putting off the final step. Above all, he wants to spare his niece Monika the bad news, since she grew up surrounded by nature. A series of mix-ups ensues. Wegner has let Berger in on the fact that everyone thinks he is the boss, and Berger takes advantage of his new “position of power.” Anger, in turn, approaches Berger and asks him to reconsider building the vacation homes, but Berger, playing Wegner, refuses. Since Berger’s mother is constantly reading crime novels, she suspects everyone of being a potential thief or kidnapper and accuses Elfriede of stealing a ring from her. Wegner’s family, who had put all their jewelry in the hotel safe, also suspect a thief when their jewelry box is returned empty. In fact, their box was mixed up with Mrs. Berger’s. Wegner and Berger pursue Elfriede, who has left by boat, but are then pursued by the police themselves and end up in the wildlife park, where they get to experience nature and a simpler way of life firsthand. At a talent contest organized by the hotel, Gaby takes the stage at Erich and Walter’s urging and sings two songs. Walter learns Gaby’s true identity from a friend of hers and provokes her, so she leaves him. Walter’s friend, in turn, is a school friend of Gaby’s, who tells her that Walter knows her true identity. The two make up in the end. Things also turn out well for Anger. While grilling meat over an open fire in the woods at the end, Wegner feels like a little boy again and abandons his building plans; instead, he would rather have the gamekeeper’s small hotel renovated to offer vacations close to nature. Anger will remain in charge of the property. And since Wegner confesses to his wife about the night with Elfriede, he is finally free of the worry of being blackmailed.
