A feminist surgeon’s effort to host a harmonious Christmas brings her sharply divided blended family together for a night of clashing views and competing plans.

The story

Wanda, a feminist and atheist surgeon, wants a harmonious Christmas celebration with her blended family. Her father, drawn into conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic, is not invited. Wanda tries to meet the guests’ conflicting dietary and consumer preferences, while disputes surface over sustainability, meat, gender identity, and family relationships. Peter arrives hoping to introduce his new girlfriend Ivana, who brings a suckling pig, despite Wanda’s wish for a meat-free celebration. Nina, Wanda’s daughter, shares that she is genderfluid and planning a transition to a trans man; the family’s reactions add another point of tension to the gathering.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Wanda, a feminist and atheist surgeon, wants a harmonious Christmas celebration with her blended family. Her father, meanwhile, has become involved in conspiracy theories during the COVID-19 pandemic and is therefore not invited to the festivities. Wanda tries to accommodate everyone, especially when it comes to their different dietary and consumer preferences, such as local, gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, and halal. She has a certified organic tree for Christmas. For Sissy’s daughter, Tony’s brother Peter has been invited to play Santa Claus, and Elke to play Mrs. Claus. The question arises whether Santa Claus is genderfluid. Peter, who is said to have cheated his ex Elke out of 10,000 euros, wants to introduce his new girlfriend Ivana to the family; Ivana brings a suckling pig. Wanda, however, wants the Christmas celebration to be sustainable and for no meat to be eaten, because meat consumption causes a significant share of global warming. Harald, Wanda’s ex-husband, who has occasionally been having sex with her again since the pandemic, years after their divorce, would nevertheless like to eat meat—perhaps it is organic meat. Edgar studies at BOKU, and he and Tony do climate-gluing activism together. Wanda’s daughter Nina holds a pronoun round, in which each person present says whether they want to be perceived as a man, a woman, or nonbinary. Nina sees herself as genderfluid, and her pronouns are they/them. She feels uncomfortable in a woman’s body and is planning a transition to a trans man. When the others do not understand her, she accuses them of mansplaining and being transphobic. Edgar says that he was raised as a girl until he transitioned. Wanda’s other daughter, Klara, says that Nina has an attention-seeking problem. Klara announces that she wants to marry Edgar because it is romantic. Wanda says marriage is an unnecessary legal commitment. After the guests discuss vegan industrial meat substitutes and make fun of Wanda’s entirely plant-based pumpkin goose—which Tony says is based on a recipe from the darknet—she throws the leftovers out the window. Ivana then suggests a digestif. Wanda says this was the last time Christmas would be celebrated at her place. Sissy offers to host Christmas the following year and to swap apartments between Sissy and Harald, and Wanda and Tony, because Wanda’s children have already moved out and their apartment would offer more space. Tony and Peter discuss their business ideas with everyone else. While Tony favors vegan superglue for climate activists who glue themselves in place, Peter suggests sperm from unvaccinated men for women who want to protect their future children. Wanda confesses to Tony that she misses him. He replies that she should stop sleeping with Harald. Sissy is polyamorous, sleeps with her Reiki teacher, and is an alternative practitioner—which, according to Wanda, is prohibited in Austria—and performs vaccine detoxes. Wanda suspects that Sissy’s clients are also the people sending her death threats over the COVID-19 vaccinations. Ivana wants to marry Peter so she can stay in Austria. The evening ends with a cheerful dance.
