A crowded family holiday on Sylt turns into a chance for Aunt Inge to rethink her life and pursue a fresh start.

The story

On Sylt, Christine hopes for a relaxing holiday with her boyfriend Alex at her parents’ vacation home. Their plans are complicated when her aunt Inge, father Heinz, and stepmother Charlotte also arrive to vacation there. Inge is behaving unusually: she has come without her husband, stays at a guesthouse, and is seen talking intimately with a stranger. When Christine asks what is happening, Inge explains that a stay at a health resort and an encounter with a confident woman have made her realize she needs to change her life. The family’s clashing expectations and Inge’s new direction soon make the holiday anything but restful.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

On Sylt, Christine wants to spend a relaxing vacation with her boyfriend Alex at her parents’ holiday home. But they hadn’t counted on her aunt Inge, her father Heinz, and his wife Charlotte all wanting to vacation there too. During the holiday, Aunt Inge behaves very strangely. First, Christine notices that she has come alone and that her husband Walter isn’t with her. It isn’t long before Christine sees her having a rather intimate conversation with a strange man. Inge isn’t staying at the holiday home either, but at a guesthouse, which her brother—Christine’s father—doesn’t like at all. When Christine confronts her aunt, Inge reveals her secret: since going to a health resort and meeting a very self-confident woman there, she has realized that she, too, needs to change something about her life and can’t keep going on in the same old rut. A short time later, Inge’s new acquaintance arrives on Sylt as well, and Christine can’t quite understand what her aunt finds so fascinating about this Renate. Christine’s father doesn’t understand his sister either, so he calls his brother-in-law to ask what is going on with Inge. Walter thus learns that Inge is on Sylt and immediately sets off to see her. As soon as he arrives, Inge falls and has to spend a short time in hospital. But when her family members want to visit her, all she wants is to be left alone, so she sends them away. Her husband Walter dutifully withdraws without complaining. His brother-in-law, however, thinks he should make a bit more of himself, which would please Inge. Heinz persuades him to get a new, and above all more stylish, wardrobe, and he “has to” dye his hair too. With all the commotion Heinz is causing, even his wife Charlotte suddenly can’t stand being around him anymore. She says she needs a break too, and leaves. Christine and Alex had actually wanted to rent a room so they could be alone, but in this extraordinary family situation Christine can’t bring herself to leave her father on his own. Alex, however, won’t go along with that and heads to a hotel. Meanwhile, Inge has a major problem. Her dream of starting over is in danger of falling apart. She hadn’t come to Sylt for no reason: she had inherited a house there from a friend. That was the only reason she came here, and she had met with the lawyer Mark Kampmann several times to settle the matter. But since her accident, the will has gone missing, and without that document she can’t assert her claim. She had dreamed of turning her inheritance into a multigenerational home, but now that seems a long way off. When she wants to show Christine the large house, she finds Renate there, having a real-estate agent show her around. However, he won’t reveal who his client is. Inge is initially confused, but figures it out anyway: lawyer Kampmann has filed a claim with the court and looks set to succeed. She wants to confront Kampmann together with Christine and Alex. Walter and Heinz also want to pay the man a visit to find out what connects him to Inge. Now the truth comes to light, and Inge gets her will back. After Walter gets the better of Kampmann with a punch, Inge is smitten with her husband. She offers to live with him in the new house on Sylt. Together, they now want to bring a little more variety into their lives and talk to each other more again.
