Full plot (contains spoilers)

Alfons Keilinger, owner of the bedding store “The World as a Bed,” is actually happily married to his wife, Margot. When he hires the young designer Jette Klee, he runs into trouble with Paul Hufnagel, his designer of many decades, who is a very eccentric man. Hufnagel thinks Keilinger is trying to edge him out and replace him with Klee. The two men have known each other for a very long time, and Keilinger is convinced that he has to look out for Hufnagel, ever since Hufnagel’s wife left him and broke his heart, as Keilinger tells his secretary, Hannah Zorn. Hannah is the company’s good soul and lives primarily for her work. She also manages to get Hufnagel to agree to work with Jette Klee for a year to begin with. When Keilinger invites Hannah, who is secretly in love with him, to dinner, he doesn’t declare his love for her, as she briefly thinks he is about to do. Instead, he asks her to cover for the affair he has started with Jette Klee. He wants Hannah to befriend his wife so she can keep his back covered and give him more time to spend with Jette. Margot Keilinger runs a dance school, and Hannah accepts her invitation to visit it. The women do indeed become friends. Hannah realizes how lonely Margot really is. When Hannah visits Carl Valentin, her favorite innkeeper, with Margot, sparks seem to fly between him and Margot. Margot, meanwhile, already suspects that her husband is cheating on her. She now asks Hannah to keep her eyes open, too. Margot invites Hannah for a wellness weekend at Lake Tegernsee. But that same weekend, Alfons Keilinger is also there with Jette for a regatta. Margot has found two tickets to the event at home and is convinced that her husband is there with his mistress. Hannah is now caught in a dilemma: on the one hand, she feels loyalty to her employer; on the other, she cares for her new friend. When Keilinger asks her for another favor, Hannah makes a decision that culminates in her exposing the situation. Now, however, she is caught between all sides: not only has she lost her job, but Margot also ends their friendship. Alfons Keilinger is not much better off: he has lost his most loyal employee, and has not only lost Jette, but Margot wants nothing more to do with him either. The next morning, Keilinger shows up at Hannah’s door, quite drunk. He stubbornly follows her on her regular hike to an alpine pasture. After bathing in an icy mountain stream, he is almost sober again. They are both caught in a violent thunderstorm and, with great difficulty, make it to the mountain hut Hannah often visits. But, as luck would have it, the hut is closed that day because of a death. After Keilinger completely loses it and Hannah has managed to bring him around somewhat, a thick branch blown by the storm hits her on the head and knocks her down. Alarmed, Keilinger carries her into the hut, breaking down the door. There he tells Hannah that today he remembered again that his wife is the great love of his life. He asks Hannah not to leave him, because he needs her. Back home, he finds his wife in a compromising situation with Paul Hufnagel. Even so, he tells her that he has remembered again that she is the one great love of his life. Margot explains that for 24 years she had wanted to sleep with Paul once, and that she had just done it quickly before she planned to make up with Keilinger. Hannah, in turn, not only makes up with Margot, but also accepts Carl Valentin’s proposal of sorts. She had left him ten years earlier because of his alcohol addiction, and their daughter Maren is delighted too. Finally, Hannah also gets the dog she has wanted for years and takes it to the bedding store with her during the day.
