After discovering her husband’s affair, Hannah plans to divorce him—but an inheritance conditional on a happy family pushes the estranged couple to keep up appearances under one roof.
The story
Former architect Hannah Held decides to divorce her husband, Martin, after discovering his affair with his dental assistant. Their two children complicate the separation, and Aunt Käthe’s inheritance gives the family another reason to stay together: she plans to leave it to Hannah, but only for a happy family. When Käthe moves in with her childhood sweetheart, Franz, Hannah, Martin and their children move into the family villa. To protect the inheritance, they pretend to be a happy family. In private, Hannah and Martin agree to live separate lives under the same roof while presenting themselves publicly as a married couple.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Former architect Hannah Held has been married to her husband, dentist Martin Held, for 27 years. After discovering that Martin is cheating on her with Annika, his dental office assistant, she announces that she is going to divorce him. But the whole thing is not so simple, especially because of their two children, Lola and Paul. Aunt Käthe also wants to withdraw into private life and name Hannah as her heir. As she moves in with her childhood sweetheart, Franz Todsen, the family home is finally supposed to be filled with life again. Reluctantly, all four move into the villa. To avoid jeopardizing the inheritance, which their aunt will leave only to a happy family, they put on an act for her, since Hannah is aware of her responsibility to preserve the family's traditions. Despite her disappointment over her husband's infidelity, she draws up a “marriage contract” with her daughter, who is studying law. Among other things, it provides for them to live separate lives under the same roof in their new home, so that an invisible wall divides the venerable villa in two. In public, the two present themselves as a happily married couple. In private, however, things remain “ice-cold.” Martin learns painfully what it means to fend for himself, since nobody shops for him, cooks, does his laundry, or cleans. Chagrined, he realizes that perhaps their old love is not quite so worn out after all. Hannah, meanwhile, grows to love her newfound freedom and intends to return to working life. She enjoys being courted by an old acquaintance. Things are starting to go awry in Paul's romance, however. The charade is in danger of being exposed when Aunt Käthe turns up unannounced for a few days. They have to get the house in order at lightning speed so she will not notice that they have separated. Martin is forced to give up the guest room for his aunt and plans to sleep in the shared bedroom. At breakfast the next morning, they play the “happy family.” The two have no idea that their sharp, farsighted aunt has long since seen through them. Hannah's career plans change when she learns that she will soon have a grandchild to care for. She does not want to leave Lola on her own and wants to support her so she can finish her studies despite having a child. She also plans to remodel the villa to provide living space for several families. But she has made this plan on her own, and Lola is not convinced that she wants her mother to shape her future for her. Her son Paul, too, intends to go abroad for a year as soon as he finishes high school. Hannah is horrified and feels that she is no longer needed. Bitterly, she leaves the villa and decides after all to go to Berlin for a lucrative job offer. A year later, Hannah and Martin meet before the divorce judge. While their lawyers argue over whether the required year of separation has been observed, Hannah and Martin realize that they still love each other. They secretly leave the courtroom and reconcile.
