The story
Near the end of high school, farmer’s son Frieder attempts suicide with pills and is rescued, then admitted to a psychiatric hospital. His schoolmate Höppner visits him, partly because he needs someone to do his homework. After Frieder is allowed to leave, he and Höppner set up a shared home in the Auerhaus with Höppner’s girlfriend Vera and their classmate Cäcilia, an outsider. What initially seems like a good idea soon brings numerous problems. Frieder’s depression is an added strain as the group begins living together.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The farmer’s son Frieder is close to finishing high school and tries to take his own life with pills. He is found, rescued, and ends up in a psychiatric hospital. His schoolmate Höppner visits him there, but not so much because he cares deeply about Frieder as because he needs someone to do his homework. Frieder is allowed to leave the hospital and, together with Höppner and two other female classmates—Höppner’s girlfriend Vera and the outsider Cäcilia—sets up a shared home in the Auerhaus. What initially seemed like a good idea brings numerous problems. With his depression, Frieder is like a ticking time bomb. Höppner’s relationship with his girlfriend proves more difficult than he expected, and his plan to dodge the military medical examination doesn’t work either. The film ends as the viewer was already told in the prologue it would: Frieder does eventually take his own life, but in a farewell letter he offers comfort to his housemates.
