With ten days to prove their hospitals deserve to stay open, the staff of the laid-back Eichwald Clinic try a feel-good makeover while a rival professor turns to illegal methods.

The story

Germany’s healthcare reform gives two neighboring hospitals ten days to impress an inspection commission before it decides which clinic must close. At the laid-back Eichwald Clinic, friends and doctors Steffen Wesemann and Klaus Kunze first react to the ultimatum with outrage over their canceled vacation. The clinic’s kind-hearted director, Professor Keller, proposes a “feel-good clinic,” enlisting his cheerful brother-in-law, wellness expert Werner Vierkötter, along with the doctors and nurse Sylvie. Meanwhile, Professor Radwanski at the high-tech St. Georg Hospital resorts to illegal methods to try to keep his clinic open.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

As part of Germany’s healthcare reform, two neighboring hospitals are given an ultimatum: both clinics have ten days to show themselves in the best possible light. After that, a commission will decide during a final inspection which one must close. When the bad news reaches the two friends, the somewhat scatterbrained doctors Dr. Steffen Wesemann and Dr. Klaus Kunze at the laid-back Eichwald Clinic, their first reaction is simply outrage that their well-deserved vacation has been canceled. Meanwhile, at the ruthlessly high-tech-oriented St. Georg Hospital, the slick Professor Radwanski immediately resorts to illegal methods. He strikes an illicit organ deal with the head of the inspection commission, a passionate drinker: Radwanski can keep his clinic if he gets Probst a new, “virgin” liver. Apart from these criminal activities, the kind-hearted director of the Eichwald Clinic, Professor Keller, has come up with a completely different strategy. With the help of his perpetually cheerful brother-in-law, Werner Vierkötter, a “wellness expert,” he intends to establish the innovative concept of the “feel-good clinic.” Guided by the motto “Nothing’s gonna stop us now,” the exuberant Rhinelander Vierkötter also enlists the shy Wesemann, the brash Kunze, and the endearingly naïve nurse Sylvie to help create the new wellness oasis, complete with constant grins and showers of confetti. When the two doctors go to St. Georg to get a missing unit of blood, the self-proclaimed ladies’ man Kunze runs into his old flame, Dr. Christiane Tietz, who is now the lover and paramour of his rival Radwanski. The situation escalates when Wesemann accidentally prepares a donor liver as an Italian delicacy for himself and Vierkötter, even though it was intended for a transplant at the Eichwald Clinic and was also Radwanski’s last chance to secure his deal with the head of the inspection commission. Kunze and the distraught Wesemann then try to cover up the blunder and the liver transplant that was not carried out, while Radwanski sends Dr. Tietz after the already lovesick Kunze to find out which patient received the coveted liver.
