Full plot (contains spoilers)

Katinka and her two sisters live with their single mother, Marlies, on a dairy farm. Katinka is always helping out, even though she is still at school, and wants to become a farmer in the future. But she cannot take over the farm, because her brother Adrian is the one intended to do so. That leaves Katinka with only the possibility of marrying into another farming family. Adrian has got Anna pregnant, and she cannot decide what to do about the pregnancy. Adrian finds it difficult to bring himself to have a clarifying conversation with her. The family spends most of its everyday life on the farm, in the fields they work, and at the nearby lake. Anna is friends with Katinka and enjoys showing her and her sisters sports exercises. Katinka also likes talking with her grandmother, who still lives on the farm and tends a vegetable garden. On the drive back from school, a cat is hit by the car. Katinka tells the driver, Michi, to stop if the cat has not died immediately. The cat is indeed still alive, and while the others discuss what to do, Katinka gets a shovel and kills it. On another day, the veterinarian comes to castrate a llama. Katinka makes sure the llama stays still, and Marlies brings over a tomcat as well, asking the vet to castrate him too when there is an opportunity. The neighbor is also a dairy farmer, and the local dairy uses a picture of his family to advertise its yogurt. But the neighboring farmer complains about falling milk prices and puts up green crosses in protest. To attract more attention, he sets fire to a haystack, calls the police and the press, and puts out the fire with milk. But afterward no one is interested, and the neighboring farmer takes his own life in one of Marlies's fields by hanging himself from a tree. A new picture is now needed for the advertising on the yogurt jar, so Marlies's family is asked to pose for a photo shoot. In the end, Adrian and Anna stand in the middle of the picture.
