One morning, the four decide on a spur-of-the-moment trip to visit Lydia’s religious friend Anita, who lives on a farm in Brandenburg. When their car develops engine trouble, Anita somehow gets it running again. At the farm, Karlheinz and Sarah grow closer, while Lydia enjoys the place enough to stay there by herself after the others head back to Berlin. During the night, an unfamiliar man arrives and makes an extraordinary claim about his identity.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Lydia lives with Sarah in a shared apartment in Berlin. After an argument, she broke up with her boyfriend Karlheinz, who had worked as a writer in Spain, but she occasionally lets him visit their apartment. While looking for a new lover, Lydia meets Walter, whom his friends jokingly call Vogelweide. Over breakfast together, Lydia, Sarah, Karlheinz, and Walter decide, out of boredom, to make an impromptu trip to visit Anita, a friend of Lydia’s who lives in Brandenburg. Anita is very religious and, as if by magic, gets the guests’ car—which has engine trouble—running again. At Anita’s farm, Karlheinz and Sarah grow closer. Lydia likes the farm so much that she stays there alone overnight while the others return to Berlin. That night, an unknown man visits Lydia and identifies himself as Jesus Christ. After they share dinner, the two have sex. The stranger tells Lydia that the secret of the universe is love. The next morning, the stranger is lying dead in bed. When the others return to Anita’s farm, Lydia lets them in on her secret, but the stranger has suddenly disappeared. Some time later, Lydia realizes that she is pregnant and therefore wants to name her son “Jesus.”
