Days before retirement, an inspector reopens a vanished teenager’s case after human remains emerge from a moor.

The story

Police Inspector Lorenz Keller is days from retirement when the remains of a woman are unearthed in a moor, giving him a chance to revisit an unsolved disappearance. Fifteen years earlier, 18-year-old Friederike “Fee” Lohse vanished after a school party, and the investigation stalled. Keller has never put the case behind him. Attention turns to Hannes Gerhards, who was one of Fee’s few school friends and owns the part of the moor where the remains were found, but the inquiry yields no new clues or witnesses. Keller’s daughter Jutta appears to know more than she lets on, and she becomes involved as the investigation touches people connected to Fee.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Police Inspector Lorenz Keller is only a few days away from retirement. When the remains of a woman are unearthed in the moor, he sees his chance to finally bring an unsolved case to a close. Fifteen years earlier, 18-year-old Friederike “Fee” Lohse vanished without a trace after a school party. The investigation went nowhere, something Keller has never been able to get over. Hannes Gerhards is also at the center of the new investigation. He seems to have been one of the few people at school who was friends with the loner Fee, and he also owns the part of the moor where the body was found. But with no further clues or new witnesses, this lead—as so many others—comes to nothing. Only Keller’s daughter Jutta seems to know more about Fee. Using modern image-editing software, she alters old school photos and gives them to Gerhards’ new girlfriend, Helen Dahms. When Dahms, who works at the practice of Fee’s father, discovers an old ultrasound image of Fee’s unborn child, she confronts Jutta. Helen is also the one who finds Fee’s diary at Jutta’s. Just as she did 15 years earlier, jealous Jutta cannot bear that her childhood sweetheart, Hannes, has once again not chosen her. She drugs Helen with solvent, takes her to the moor, and drowns her there, just as she did Fee 15 years before. Later, when Lorenz Keller returns home from the moor, he finds the solvent in the trailer attached to Jutta’s bicycle. Jutta turns herself in and gives a statement to Keller’s colleague Krantz. Keller is devastated to learn that his wife also knew Jutta was responsible for Fee’s death. On the night Fee disappeared, Klara Keller had seen her daughter come home early in the morning with her shoes and clothes covered in moor mud, but had then given her a false alibi. Fee’s body is still missing; forensic examination dates the remains found in the moor to around 400 to 600 BC.
