Full plot (contains spoilers)

When Berta dies, the whole family gathers in their hometown of Bootshaven, including her only surviving granddaughter, Iris. Iris is to inherit the family home, but she does not know whether she wants to keep it. Too many painful memories are tied to the place. Max Ohmstedt is also present at the reading of the will. He is the brother of Mira, Iris’s former childhood friend. Iris initially stays for a week and remembers the past, when her cousin Rosmarie was still alive and she and Mira used to play together and pick on poor Max. One evening, old Mr. Lexow comes to visit and brings Iris something to eat. During their conversation, Mr. Lexow reveals that he believes he is Inga’s father. Inga is Berta’s second-oldest daughter. When he was 20, Mr. Lexow became a teacher to Berta and her sister Anna. One evening, as Mr. Lexow was strolling past Berta and Anna’s house, Anna surprised him, and the two of them slept together. The next morning, Anna came down with pneumonia, which killed her shortly afterward. Berta soon marries Hinnerk, but she is only his second choice: he was in love with Anna. Their marriage is unhappy. Hinnerk works long hours and comes home late. Berta is left alone at home with her daughter and takes care of the household. Mr. Lexow visits Berta and confesses his love for her. They kiss and make love. Hinnerk comes home that evening. Berta sleeps with him to make sure that, if she becomes pregnant, there can be no question about who the father is. After that, Berta is out of Mr. Lexow’s reach, so the question of who Inga’s biological father was is never resolved. Iris wants to visit Max’s parents to ask about Mira, but they have not lived in the house for a long time. Instead, she runs into Max again. They spend a lovely evening together, but Iris does not allow the feelings beginning to grow between them to develop. They meet several times and spend time together, and when they go swimming in a lake, Iris unexpectedly kisses Max. He returns her affection. Iris asks Max about Mira and Rosmarie. When she learns that Mira lives nearby, she arranges to meet her, but Mira does not show up. On her way back, Iris stops at the gas station in Bootshaven and remembers Peter Klaasen, who used to work there. Peter and Inga were in love with each other. Because Peter was studying mathematics, he tutored Rosmarie and Mira. Rosmarie had her eye on him too and tried to seduce him. When Inga catches Rosmarie and Peter kissing in the garden, she throws him out of the house. Mira sexually coerces Peter, and as a result she becomes pregnant. Rosmarie orders Mira to have an abortion and tells Iris about the pregnancy. They argue. At night, Rosmarie and Mira climb an apple tree standing very close to a greenhouse. Rosmarie climbs onto the greenhouse and falls; she dies. At the end of the film, Iris meets Max to tell him that she will accept her inheritance and keep the house. Max kisses Iris and is overjoyed. Iris still has not met Mira. However, Max has received a letter from Mira. She has married and included photos from the wedding. In the picture, Mira is with her wife, and Mira looks exactly like Rosmarie.
