When Lucille’s dance-averse husband refuses to join her, she goes dancing on her own.

The story

In Paris, Lucille Chauvelin loves dancing, but her husband Edmond dislikes it and repeatedly refuses her invitations to join her on the dance floor. Rather than be discouraged, Lucille goes out dancing alone. She finds a partner in Claude Gerson, one of Edmond’s dance-loving friends, who has admired Lucille for some time but has always been turned away. The contrast between Lucille’s enthusiasm and Edmond’s refusal sets the comic marital conflict in motion, as she seeks the dancing companionship she cannot get at home.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

This cheerful marriage-and-dance comedy about a round of romantic entanglements begins with a simple realization in the Parisian home of the Chauvelin couple: Madame loves dancing, while her stiff husband is a complete dance-hater. Lucille repeatedly tries to persuade her husband Edmond to finally glide across the dance floor with her, but he flatly refuses and thinks dancing is silly. Lucille, however, is not deterred and goes dancing alone instead. She quickly finds a substitute partner in Claude Gerson, a dance-loving friend of her husband. Claude has had his eye on Lucille for quite some time, but until now she has always turned him down. At last, he sees his big chance coming … At the dance hall, Lucille meets the attractive Max de Sillery, not only a friend of Claude’s but also a gifted dancer. She is as if enchanted as Max leads her across the dance floor, and the two dance until well into the night. Afterwards, they go off together and continue their celebration at Yvonne Trieux’s apartment. The young woman is not only an actress but also a neighbor of the Chauvelin couple. Edmond Chauvelin now sees a good opportunity to get back at his pleasure-seeking wife and flirt shamelessly with the neighbor. She, in turn, uses the opportunity to make her boyfriend Max jealous and begins to flirt with Edmond. In the end, however, the romantic and dancing conflicts are amicably resolved, and the original couples find their way back to each other. Edmond has realized how important dancing is in Lucille’s life and finally learns to dance himself.
