The story
After being forced to take in Constance, a young student, Henri—a cantankerous widower—shares his Paris apartment with her. She is struggling with her studies and music, a difficult relationship with her father, an unstable love life, and the rent, despite working as a waitress. Henri offers her an unusual way to avoid paying: she must seduce his son Paul, whom Henri despises, and break up Paul’s marriage to Valérie, whom he hates. Constance reluctantly agrees, embarrassed by the plan, and sets out to carry it through.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Henri, a cantankerous old man who has been widowed for thirty years, is forced to take in a young student, Constance, in his Paris apartment. She has to put up with her landlord’s temperament while already struggling with her failures in her studies and music, her difficult relationship with her father, a fruit and vegetable seller at the markets in Orléans, and her unstable love life. On top of that, she has trouble paying her rent despite working a small job as a waitress. In exchange for being excused from paying rent, Henri makes her seduce his son Paul, whom he despises, in order to separate him from his wife Valérie, whom the old man hates. Constance agrees, despite her embarrassment, and does indeed break up the marriage. Having completed her mission, she makes it clear to Paul that their affair will not go any further. He gets back together with his wife, who tells him she is pregnant—a child they had been hoping for for a decade—and the couple reunites. In the months that follow, encouraged by Henri, Constance prepares for an entrance exam at a music school in London. While she is in England, Henri is hospitalized in critical condition. Before he dies, Paul introduces him to his grandson, and Constance tells him she has passed the entrance exam—a deliberate lie so that he can go in peace.
