Full plot (contains spoilers)
While King Louis X of France is away on a military campaign, Queen Marguerite rules as regent in Paris. During this time, the city’s residents are alarmed by mysterious murders near a tower. Three men—Philippe, Buridan, and a stranger—are invited to an inn for a party with young ladies. When they meet the three masked beauties, Philippe and the stranger are killed. Buridan manages to escape. At a reception held by the queen, Buridan recognizes one of the masked women: it is the queen! He tries to use this knowledge to his advantage and demands that Her Majesty give him the post of chancellor, currently held by the Duke of St. Lorrain. Buridan is given the post, but is then summoned to a rendezvous at the tower. Instead, he sends a friend, Gauthier, to the strange meeting, while he himself goes to visit an old friend. To his horror, Buridan soon learns that Philippe and Gauthier are—or were—his long-lost sons, born to Marguerite when she was not yet queen but was his lover! To erase every trace of her compromising past, Marguerite had tried to have her own offspring killed—at first without success. Buridan rushes to the tower, but Gauthier has meanwhile also been murdered. Now exposed, the queen has no escape. Marguerite hurls herself into the Seine, engulfed in flames.
