Full plot (contains spoilers)
Nina Schneider, a civil engineer on leave and a vocational schoolteacher, travels with her colleague to Luena in eastern Angola. In the provincial capital of Moxico, she plans to teach schoolchildren for three months. But conditions in the country are even more catastrophic than she had expected. Rusting military equipment lies scattered everywhere, children play in the broken streets, and everything seems to be falling apart. When little, cheerful Mumbi dies because of a land mine, Nina blames herself deeply. So she decides to train as a deminer with Mike Mason, a South African. She completes the two-week training course alongside ten other volunteers. During the course, she also meets the alcoholic doctor. Her very first assignment takes her near a copper mine tunnel in the center of the country, where she is supposed to locate, defuse, and dispose of both pressure mines and deadly fragmentation mines. Personal rivalries among the deminers, as well as Angolan soldiers, make the task more difficult. Then Nina suddenly finds herself with one foot on a booby trap.
