When an art student’s fib sends her older sister to confront a sculptor, a forgotten handbag sparks romantic misunderstandings.

The story

Art student Ulla tells her older sister Ilse that she is posing for sculptor Professor Viktor Arnim, prompting Ilse to visit him that evening. In the excitement, Ilse leaves her handbag behind and, rather than explain her real reason for coming, claims a man named Meier stole it. Viktor and his friend Philipp set out to retrieve it, but the handbag they find in boxer Willi Meier’s apartment is not Ilse’s. When Viktor’s fiancée Olivia arrives and exposes the lie, Ilse says she made it up to get to know Viktor better, while claiming she has fallen in love with him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Art student Ulla tells her older sister Ilse a fib, claiming that she is posing for the sculptor Professor Viktor Arnim. Ilse visits him that evening to confront him. In all the excitement, she forgets her handbag, which the professor immediately notices. Ilse clearly finds Viktor likable and no longer wants to act like a strict older sister. So she lies to Viktor and his friend Philipp Geiger, who is also there, saying that a man named Meier has stolen her handbag. Viktor and Philipp immediately offer to get it back. As it happens, the well-known boxer Willi Meier lives nearby. Viktor and Philipp also find a woman’s handbag in his apartment and secretly take it with them. They are both surprised when Ilse points out that it is not her handbag. Even so, they want to help the lady, especially since Philipp is also very taken with her. A little later, Viktor’s fiancée, Olivia Palm, arrives. She is a customer at the fashion salon where Ilse works and exposes the story about the handbag as a lie. Although Viktor tells her what he considers the truthful version of events, his jealous fiancée does not believe a word of it. Ilse conceals the real reason for her visit and instead claims that she has fallen in love with the professor. She says she made up the story about the handbag so she could get to know him better. The following morning, Viktor and Philipp arrive at the fashion salon one after the other to bring Ilse gifts. Olivia also turns up there to confront Ilse. Ilse has no intention of clearing up the misunderstandings involving the hysterical Olivia and the elusive Viktor, who is increasingly proving to be a womanizer. After Philipp and Viktor also show up at Ilse’s apartment to court her, Ilse promptly leaves town with her sisters to visit Aunt Hermine in the country. Ilse is astonished to discover that both of her suitors have followed her. Philipp pretends to have had an accident, while Viktor claims to be researching Goethe, who is said to have once lived on the estate. In this way, Aunt Hermine puts them up in the house. To escape her pursuers, Ilse says she is engaged to her cousin Pipo Tonero, who is also there. Soon everyone knows about the deceptions, so Viktor and Philipp once again begin to hope. Then Ilse has to interrupt her holiday to finish Olivia’s wedding dress on behalf of her boss. Olivia’s wedding is to take place in just a few days, which visibly disappoints Ilse. To her dismay, Viktor also asks her to deliver his bride’s dress in person on the wedding day. Ilse has no idea yet that she herself will become Viktor’s wife. Meanwhile, Olivia marries the boxer Willi Meier.
