A family inheritance, a grandson’s hidden gambling problem, and a generational clash unsettle the Sackbauers’ household.

The story

After Franzi “Nudlaug” Vejvoda dies in a car accident in Ireland, the Sackbauer family unexpectedly inherits his villa and overgrown garden in Baden, Lower Austria. Mundl eagerly begins fixing up the garden, but his grandson René faces mounting problems: the economic crisis has affected him, and a secret gambling addiction has left him bankrupt and forced to sell his house. Matters worsen when René catches his seventeen-year-old son Edi smoking hashish with his girlfriend Jamila. René’s angry reaction drives Edi and Jamila to leave home. With Mundl’s wife Toni away in Ireland to settle the inheritance, the young couple hopes they can temporarily stay with Mundl.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After Franzi “Nudlaug” Vejvoda dies in a car accident in Ireland, the Sackbauer family unexpectedly inherits his villa, with its large garden, in a cottage district in Baden, Lower Austria. The villa itself is in acceptable condition, but the garden is not. Mundl promptly sets about sprucing it up with garden gnomes, lanterns, and plenty of love. Mundl’s grandson René, however, has other worries. The economic crisis affecting everyone is causing him trouble, but above all, his secret gambling addiction has left him bankrupt, and he has to sell his house. As if René did not have enough to worry about already, he catches his seventeen-year-old son Edi smoking hashish with his African-descended girlfriend, Jamila. René loses his temper and starts ranting and scolding them. Edi will not put up with it and moves out with Jamila. Since Mundl’s wife Toni has flown to Ireland with Kai Uwe, the lover of her daughter Hanni, to settle the inheritance, Edi and his girlfriend Jamila think they can stay temporarily with “Mundl-Urli,” since he should now have plenty of room. In the meantime, Mundl, now without his wife, makes a new friend: Motzl, a “tramp.” Karli and Irmi, Mundl’s son and daughter-in-law, also get caught up in things as they fight for their children’s well-being and try to clarify their relationship. When Toni returns from Ireland, she finds situations—and a Mundl—that she could never have imagined. The nice neighbor, the dapper Mr. Rischka, even manages to persuade the Sackbauers to go to the opera. In the end, the Sackbauers prepare for a big surprise party celebrating Mundl and Toni’s diamond wedding anniversary. The party turns out to be a surprise for everyone else in attendance, too.
