When a woman claims to be a confectionery magnate’s granddaughter, his doubts set an investigation in motion.

The story

Friedrich Hoffmann runs Mona, a Viennese confectionery factory and pastry-shop chain, and has just bought rival Schokospaß, appointing Dr. Paul Degenhart to manage it despite his nephews’ displeasure. Then Susanne Arnold slips into Friedrich’s office and says she is his granddaughter, presenting a letter from her recently deceased grandmother, Elisabeth, Friedrich’s childhood sweetheart. Unsure whether Susanne is a con artist seeking his money, Friedrich asks Paul to investigate her. Meanwhile, Susanne applies for an advertised assistant’s post at Schokospaß and is hired. Paul delegates the inquiry through his executive secretary, Rosalinde, who hires a detective.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Friedrich Hoffmann is the director of Mona, a Viennese confectionery factory and chain of pastry shops. His nephews Oskar and Theodor are senior employees and shareholders there. One day, Friedrich buys the rival company Schokospaß, but, much to his nephews’ displeasure, appoints Dr. Paul Degenhart as its managing director. Susanne Arnold also turns up in his office, slipping past his executive secretary, Rosalinde Flieder, and tells him that she is his granddaughter. She gives him a letter from her recently deceased grandmother, Elisabeth Arnold, Friedrich Hoffmann’s childhood sweetheart. He had called her “Mona Lisa,” or sometimes simply “Mona,” and named his company after her. Their son, whom Friedrich never knew about, had died ten years earlier. With his tarock group, consisting of Dr. Hahn and Professor Tischbein, and his servant and chauffeur Wenzel, Friedrich wonders whether Susanne might be a con artist after his money. He therefore asks Paul to find out more about her. Paul passes the task on to Rosalinde Flieder, who in turn hires her cousin Schachermayer as a detective. Meanwhile, Susanne applies for a job advertised in the newspaper as an assistant to the managing director at Schokospaß and gets the position straight away. Paul is smitten with Susanne from the outset. On a business trip to Budapest, where they meet their business partner Gesa Rottwanier, the two grow closer. Susanne shares an apartment with Toni, an aspiring architect, and Elvira. Toni and Friedrich Hoffmann meet there, and Friedrich commissions Toni to develop a concept for the Mona branches. At Mona’s headquarters, Toni meets Lilo Hoffmann, and the two begin a relationship. When Paul comes to believe that Friedrich has also taken an interest in Susanne, he becomes jealous. Susanne and Friedrich soon clear up the misunderstanding. Meanwhile, the nephews and their wives, Jenny and Irene, are convinced that Susanne has both Friedrich and Paul wrapped around her finger, and fear for their inheritance. At a family gathering, Friedrich finally introduces Susanne Arnold to all his assembled relatives as his granddaughter.
