A housemaid tries to win a marriage proposal from her womanizing employer without sleeping with him.
The story
After Susanne finds her boyfriend Rolf in bed with his housekeeper, she leaves him, while her friend Andrea proposes a wager: she will make Rolf propose marriage without sleeping with him. Andrea takes the housekeeper’s vacant job and moves into Rolf’s home. Rolf works as an agony uncle for people with sexual problems, and his secretary brings him readers’ letters each day. As Rolf’s advances and the letters’ intimate questions create opportunities for experimentation, Andrea tries to keep control of their flirtation and steer events toward her wager’s goal.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Susanne arrives unannounced at her boyfriend Rolf’s and finds him in bed with Doris, his housekeeper. Rolf earns his living as an agony uncle for people with sexual problems. Susanne says she will forgive him if he marries her—but the columnist for a major illustrated magazine is still unwilling to do so. Susanne leaves for good, and an angry Rolf fires Doris. Susanne pours out her troubles to her friend Andrea. Andrea remarks that men stop wanting to go to the registry office once they’ve slept with someone, and offers Susanne the opposite wager: she will get a marriage proposal from Rolf without sleeping with him. Susanne accepts. Andrea applies for Doris’s now-vacant position, gets the job, and moves into the maid’s room in Rolf’s house. Every day, secretary Yvonne brings Rolf letters from readers. To answer some of the questions, they try out the problems themselves—for example, figuring out the best position for having sex under a lion skin without having trouble breathing. Every day, Andrea lets Rolf’s advances go right up to the final step, and when he pretends to be sick, she plays sick too. They then take turns nursing each other. Andrea only loses her steady control of the situation when she comes home hallucinating after a pot party. She also directs events with appearances by her two friends at Rolf’s villa. With her intuition, she shows visitors unusual ways to solve their sexual problems, including one of Rolf’s former girlfriends and a woman seeking advice. Despite Rolf’s aversion to marriage, he and Andrea confess their love for each other, but then have a falling-out and their employment arrangement ends. During a “sex counseling” session with Fräulein Reizinger, Rolf uses his impotence as a pretext to fake suicidal intent with a cocktail of pills. He accuses Andrea of ruining him with her “marriage fixation,” and says that the only thing that might still help him is if she lies down with him for a few minutes. Andrea now “saves” her apparently death-seeking love by having sex with him. Afterwards, she finds empty vitamin-pill containers in the bathroom and realizes she has been tricked. She runs off and gives Susanne a 1,000-mark note for the wager she assumes she has lost. But, hidden in Rolf’s garden, she hears him dictating his intention to marry to Yvonne. He notices her, and she receives the proposal verbally.
