As fourth-grade marks worsen before a consequential school transition, worried parents try to make their teacher give up the class.

The story

At a primary school in Dresden, grades in a fourth-grade class are worsening as midyear reports approach. Because the reports will determine which type of secondary school pupils attend, many parents grow anxious. They blame the class teacher, Mrs. Müller, for the poor marks and decide she should give up the class. Several arrange a meeting, present her with a petition, and make their case. Yet their concern is not choosing the right secondary school for their children, but securing a formal qualification.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The grades of some pupils in a fourth-grade class at a primary school in Dresden (Juri Gagarin Primary School) are getting worse. With the midyear report cards approaching, which will determine what type of secondary school the children go on to, many parents are worried. They decide to ensure that the class teacher, Mrs. Müller, gives up the class. To that end, several of them arrange a meeting with her, hand her a petition, and claim that the teacher is to blame for the poor grades. The parents are not concerned with choosing the right secondary school, but only with obtaining a formal qualification. Later, the teacher leaves the classroom for a while, leaving her bag behind. After various arguments among themselves, some of the parents look in the bag for their children’s oral grades. Since the grades are much better than expected, and there is therefore nothing to prevent their children from attending the Gymnasium, they now try to persuade Mrs. Müller—who is by this point willing to give up the class—to do the opposite. They succeed. At the end, the teacher wants to tell the parents the grades, but it turns out that she does not have the current marks with her, and that the sheet the parents found contains the previous year’s grades.
