A desperate wife robs a bank with a toy gun and flees with the banker she secretly admires.

The story

Werner Müller loses his job when his employer stops making toy guns that look too realistic. His family is already burdened by a heavily mortgaged home, demanding children, and an 80,000 Deutsche Mark debt that prevents them from getting another loan. His wife, Carmen, decides to take matters into her own hands by robbing a bank with a toy gun and a disguise. The plan takes an unexpected turn when branch manager Lothar Fuchs recognizes her: he is their neighbor and the man she secretly admires. Carmen takes him hostage and flees, setting off a journey that complicates their lives and relationships.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Werner Müller becomes unemployed after his employer stops making toy guns that look too real. Their home is heavily mortgaged, their spoiled children Natascha and Jean-Jaques insist on having their needs met, and the bank refuses to grant any more loans in view of their 80,000 Deutsche Mark debt. Werner’s wife, Carmen, decides to solve their problems by robbing a bank. She carries out the robbery with a toy gun and made up beyond recognition. Despite her disguise, the branch manager, Lothar Fuchs, recognizes her. He is not only the Müllers’ neighbor but also Carmen’s secret crush, whom she has watched through binoculars from her bathroom window. She takes the wealthy dream man hostage and goes on the run with him. First in a hotel and later in a camper in the Allgäu—where Carmen once spent her honeymoon—the two grow closer. Meanwhile, back at home, Werner finds comfort with Lothar’s girlfriend, Gabriele. Eventually, the banker and his kidnapper are drawn back home, and all four return to their original partners. Together, they enrich themselves through computer fraud at the expense of a Swiss bank and pass on some of the loot to their neighbors in their row-house development.
