Full plot (contains spoilers)
The newly graduated doctor Hannes Fröhlich is offered a position at Professor Rodenburg’s hospital. On his first day at work, he befriends a little girl named Stefanie. By chance, he overhears a few nurses speculating that he got the job only because he is friends with Clarissa, the professor’s daughter. Disappointed, Hannes decides against taking the hospital job. That evening, his roommate Hansi tells him he has received a telegram from his uncle. In it, Dr. Bichler, a doctor very popular in his hometown, asks his nephew to cover for him while he is on vacation. But Hansi has kept it from his uncle that he left medical school early, so he cannot do him the favor. Hannes agrees to take the job instead and sets off. On the way, he meets a young woman named Eva Holm, who is traveling with a little boy, Peter, to the same town as he is. Hannes gives them a ride in his car and takes them to their apartment. Eva, who is new to the area herself, plans to start her new job as a pharmacist the following day. While Hannes has his first experiences as a doctor in his new surroundings, another storyline unfolds at Rodenburg Hospital, where little Stefanie is giving the doctors a hard time and refuses to be treated by anyone other than Dr. Fröhlich. Moritz Morris, the assistant to the girl’s allegedly very wealthy father, therefore travels with her to follow the young doctor. The girl would like to attend a boarding school there, but the town plans to close it for financial reasons. The viewer later learns that Stefanie’s father is in prison for a bank robbery. Moritz, his accomplice whose identity is unknown to the police, visits him regularly and keeps the money they stole together. The two donate it to keep the boarding school open. In the meantime, through various complications, Hannes gets to know Eva and Peter better. He learns that Eva is not the boy’s mother, but only his aunt, and that Peter, completely unaware of the situation, is hoping his father will return soon. He recognizes Hannes as his father and wishes he would never leave again. Hannes and Eva, who have fallen in love with each other, marry at the end.
