Full plot (contains spoilers)
Massimo, who runs a hotel in Cortina d’Ampezzo with his brother Eros, a chef who loves potatoes and women, has recently been widowed and has two children: Lara and Matteo, the latter studying in Miami. There, Matteo meets Barbara, an Italian American, and falls in love with her. Before long, the two become engaged, and she gets pregnant. A few days after Massimo, Lara, and Eros arrive, the couple’s baby is born unusually black, to everyone’s astonishment and to Matteo’s disgust toward his new family. He beats up Tommy, an African American who is Barbara’s best friend and former boyfriend, and gets back together with his own ex-girlfriend, Felicity. It will turn out that Barbara did not cheat on him at all; it was simply a genetic quirk. Despite this, Angela, the girl’s mother and a manager, fears that Barbara may actually be the daughter of a very famous African American man she once had a relationship with. After telling Massimo, they hire Carmelina, Barbara’s paternal grandmother, to invent a story that Nino, Barbara’s father and Angela’s ex-husband, was fathered by a man who came from Tunisia to Sicily and slept with her. A spark develops between the two grandparents, Massimo and Angela; but Massimo is already involved with Luminosa, the hotel’s receptionist and waitress, who has stayed in Italy. She nevertheless arrives in Miami, where she runs into Nino, her old flame, and they get together, to Massimo’s dismay. Eros falls in love with Maria, Angela’s secretary, who is actually a man. Mario, that is, Maria, falls in love with Lara, who gradually realizes that the supposedly female secretary is a man. Mario vanishes when he finds Eros in bed. Lara finally discovers his true nature when the two sleep together. In the end, while Mario/Maria tells Eros, who is worked up and wants to marry her, that he is a man, Felicity reveals that she is not the antagonist and brings Matteo and Barbara back together. They marry a few steps from the ocean while Massimo and Angela talk about the mysterious, very famous black man.
