A captain unfamiliar with the mountain region investigates a shepherd’s murder with help from a wolf-control officer.
The story
When a shepherd’s lifeless body is discovered in mountain pastures, an apparent wolf attack soon gives way to a murder investigation. Captain Marion Guichard takes charge despite being unfamiliar with the area, and receives help from Fred Roos, a lieutenant in the wolf-control service. The victim seems to have had no enemies, but a complaint he filed five years earlier against a schoolteacher—who had a relationship with a 17-year-old boy—ended her career in scandal. Investigators must consider whether the teacher could have sought revenge.
