When a woman is found murdered in a Mercantour village, two locals suspect a missing slaughterhouse owner and set out after him.

The story

In the Mercantour, Suzanne, a well-known local woman, is found murdered in a stable, and the village of Saint-Victor is shaken. Most residents believe a wolf is responsible, but Suzanne’s adopted son Soliman and an old shepherd known as Le Veilleux suspect Massart, a taciturn slaughterhouse owner who has vanished. In his empty house, they discover a road map marked with a strange, winding route from Saint-Victor to Paris. The pair set off to follow the trail, joined by Camille and Lawrence Johnston, a Canadian grizzly specialist who has settled in the area. Meanwhile, former partner Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg learns of the case from a television report in Paris.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg’s former partner, the elusive Camille, has settled in the Mercantour. Lawrence Johnston, meanwhile, is a Canadian specialist in grizzlies. He, too, settled in the Mercantour for his studies, but stayed for Camille. One day, Suzanne, “the big one,” as Lawrence calls her, is found with her throat slit in a stable. The small village of Saint-Victor is deeply shaken; everyone knew her. Local TV stations arrive to cover the story. In Paris, Jean-Baptiste Adamsberg happens upon the news report on television. He recognizes Camille, with whom he is still in love. Discreetly, he gathers a few details about the investigation. You never know… Meanwhile, tempers are flaring in Saint-Victor. Everyone believes that Suzanne’s death is the work of a wolf. But two people doubt it: the first is young Soliman, Suzanne’s adopted son; the second is an old shepherd nicknamed “Le Veilleux,” whose love for Suzanne is no secret to anyone. They think the murderer is a man named Massart, the owner of the slaughterhouses, a taciturn individual who has disappeared from Saint-Victor. In his empty house, they find a road map on which an odd, winding route linking Saint-Victor to Paris has been drawn. Soliman and Le Veilleux decide to set off in pursuit of Massart, following the same route. Camille and Lawrence accompany them on their journey, though they are not convinced. And yet murders occur all along the way…
