Human remains uncovered in the Camargue lead an investigator toward the wartime history of Indochinese workers sent there under extremely precarious conditions.
The story
During construction work in the Camargue, workers uncover human remains buried underground. Commissioner Marianne Prévost, an expert in complex investigations for the International Criminal Tribunal, takes the case, assisted by Lola Hardon, a young recruit at the start of her career. Initial analyses indicate that those buried there died at different times; the remains are more than 70 years old and, with one exception, Asian in origin. The inquiry turns to the Occupation, when Indochinese workers were sent to the region for arduous work in extremely precarious conditions, and asks which landowners might have denied them a dignified burial.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
During construction work in the heart of the Camargue, workers discover human remains buried underground. The case is assigned to Commissioner Marianne Prévost, an expert in complex investigations for the International Criminal Tribunal, assisted by Lola Hardon, a young recruit at the beginning of her career. Initial analyses reveal that the people buried there did not die at the same time, and that these remains, which date back more than 70 years, are all of Asian origin except for one. During the Occupation, following the defeat of 1940, Indochinese workers were sent to the Camargue to perform arduous tasks in extremely precarious conditions. Which of the landowners of the time could have treated these workers with such contempt as to deprive them of a dignified burial?
