A murder in Verdun’s red zone draws an investigator into the mystery of a woman who vanished decades earlier.

The story

In Verdun’s red zone, Jean Mercier, mayor of the ghost village of Bezonvaux, is found murdered. Clara Merisi, a captain in the criminal investigation unit at the Nancy Regional Judicial Police Department, takes charge of the case with assistance from the Verdun gendarmerie and François Gilbert, a forensic anthropologist and historian at the Douaumont Ossuary. Days later, Gilbert uncovers a woman’s body near the crime scene. Her death dates not to the Great War but to the 1980s, and she had disappeared around thirty years earlier. The discoveries set a local investigation against the haunting backdrop of a battlefield landscape.
