At a village festival, a local policeman’s discovery of a murdered lawyer turns a festive night into a murder investigation.
The story
Village policeman Franz Gasperlmaier discovers the body of Dr. Hubert Naglreiter, a wealthy lawyer from Vienna, in the festival tent at the Altaussee Kirtag. He and his easygoing station commander, Friedrich Kahlß, investigate with Detective Inspector Dr. Renate Kohlross. Naglreiter was stabbed with a hunting knife, and the forensic pathologist reports that his body was moved after death. Blood traces on a bench and a memory card found in the victim’s apartment provide early leads. The inquiry also encounters Naglreiter’s wife’s affair with her paragliding instructor, Marcel Gaisrucker, who denies killing him.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Village policeman Franz Gasperlmaier finds a dead man in the festival tent at the Altaussee Kirtag. He drags him outside to the urinal and leaves him there. The victim, Dr. Hubert Naglreiter, was a wealthy lawyer from Vienna and had been stabbed with a hunting knife. In the investigation, Gasperlmaier and his easygoing station commander, Friedrich Kahlß, receive help from Detective Inspector Dr. Renate Kohlross of the district police command. The forensic pathologist, Dr. Kapaun, tells them that the body was moved again some time after the victim’s death. Gasperlmaier tells Kohlross that he did not touch the body. Blood traces are found on a bench in the festival tent, and in the victim’s apartment Gasperlmaier finds a memory card in the wardrobe. Naglreiter’s wife had been having an affair with her paragliding instructor, Marcel Gaisrucker, whom the police find in bed with Ines Maier. He says he slept all night and did not kill Hubert Naglreiter. Within the next 24 hours, Naglreiter’s wife is recovered dead from the lake, and their son Stefan is found beaten to death on the shore. Evi Haim, the Naglreiters’ cleaning woman, tells Kohlross that she and her daughter Natalie, who was in love with Stefan, had been sexually harassed by Dr. Naglreiter. After Kohlross suggests that Gasperlmaier moved Naglreiter’s body after death, he admits to her that before the forensic team arrived, he dragged the body from the festival tent to the urinal so the tent would not have to be closed and the Kirtag could continue. Kohlross then advises him that, if questioned, he should say he initially took the dead man for a drunk who had fallen asleep and wanted to turn him over; that would explain the fiber traces from Gasperlmaier on the body. Another of Dr. Naglreiter’s enemies is Johann Podlutzki, the Naglreiters’ neighbor, who found Stefan’s body. Naglreiter’s wife was bludgeoned to death, and her body may have been taken out onto the lake in the Naglreiters’ flat-bottomed boat. Rhinestones and a cow-horn button for lederhosen are found in the boathouse of flat-bottomed-boat operator Heinz Leumer. Leumer tells them that Gaisrucker went swimming in the third boat from the boathouse. Marcel’s acquaintance Evita Schwaiger saw him on the lake with Naglreiter’s wife at the time of the murder of Hubert Naglreiter. Gaisrucker says he did not kill the woman, who had left her husband and wanted to marry him. The memory card found at the Naglreiters’ contains photos showing, among others, Natalie Haim in a bikini with Stefan. Judith Naglreiter, the daughter and sister of the murder victims, tells Kohlross that she hated her father and brother, and that her mother wanted a divorce. Kohlross suspects that Hubert Naglreiter killed his wife and was then killed by his son Stefan. During the questioning, the hunter Sepp Haim approaches the Naglreiters’ house while drunk, carrying his firearm, and shoots out the windows. Kohlross is seriously injured and has to be taken to hospital, leaving Gasperlmaier to continue the investigation alone. Sabrina Höllerer is Natalie Haim’s best friend and a former student of Gasperlmaier’s wife Christine, who works as a vocational-school teacher. Sabrina tells Christine that Hubert Naglreiter tried to rape Natalie at the Kirtag, whereupon Natalie stabbed him with the hunting knife. She later confessed what she had done to Stefan. The autopsy shows that Hubert Naglreiter was stabbed twice at different times, with the second stab, inflicted with the second weapon, proving fatal. The Gasperlmaiers suspect that Stefan killed his father after the latter murdered his mother. Natalie, in turn, killed Stefan with a stone in self-defense after he also tried to rape her.
